Type Locality and Naming

Tuotuohe Basin (NW of Tanggula Range). The naming section is located at Aburi’ajiazai, Golmud City (SW division), Qinghai. Named the Tuotuohe Group by Guo Gengcheng et al. in 1988. Ca. 34°N,


Lithology and Thickness

Purplish red, thick-bedded conglomerate, inequigranular lithic sandstone and silty mudstone with grayish purple, thick-bedded sandy limestone, belonging to a sequence of mainly piedmont alluvial, coarse clastic rocks and in some areas to fluvio-lacustrine deposits. It is 250–300 m thick and shows the change of being thin in the west and thick in the east.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation has an unconformable contact with the underlying Triassic Jiezha Gr in type section; and locally on the Cretaceous Xueshan Fm.

Upper contact

The formation has an unconformable contact with the overlying Paleogene Yaxicuo Fm, marked by the appearance of sandy limestone.

Regional extent

It is mainly distributed in the vicinity of Hoh Xil and Zadoi County.

Fossils

There outcrops biogenetic limestone. It yields the ostracods Cypris and Candoniella and the charophytes Peckichara.
